Softball Recap: Doubleheader at Calumet
Hammond, IN- The MMU Blue Angel softball team headed East on Sunday for a double header against the Crimson Wave of Calumet College.
Mount Mary put a runner on base in the first inning of game number one when Lily Day singled, but the Blue Angels were unable to plate a run in the first.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the 3rd, when Mount Mary would stage a rally. Ava Flannery, Lily Day and Amanda Nance came through with hits to stake MMU to a 2-0 lead.
Calumet scored a single run in the bottom of the 3rd and MMU took a 2-1 advantage into inning number four. The trend repeated itself in the 4th, one run by the Crimson Wave would even the contest at 2.
In the top of the 5th, hits by Alex Eads, Lily Day, and a walk by Taylor Hames would load the bases for MMU with no one out. Kylie Ann Kluck came through in the clutch with a 2 run single and the Blue Angels reclaimed the lead at 4-2. Tina Finley would knock in a run to extend the lead to a 5-2 margin.
The back-and-forth scoring continued as Calumet plated two in the bottom of the 5th to pull within 1 run at 5-4.
Unfortunately for MMU, Calumet produced a huge inning in the bottom of the 6th. The Crimson Wave would score nine runs in the 6th frame for the 13-5 victory.
Despite the tough final result, the day's first game featured many positives for Mount Mary. The Blue Angels took a lead into the 6th inning behind the work in the pitching circle of Lily Day.
Day also paced MMU offensively with 3 hits, Mount Mary produced nine hits in the game, Alex Eads collected two in addition to the three hits by Day. Amanda Nance and Kylie Ann Kluck each knocked in a pair runs in the loss.
In Game two, Calumet started fast. Scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the 1st.
Ayja Cushman would drive in a run in the 2nd inning for the first Blue Angel run of game 2.
Calumet would then stretch their lead to 16-1. Mount Mary would not give up however and scored a run in the top of the 5th when Lily Day drove in Alex Eads. Amanda Nance and Kylie Ann Kluck followed up with their own rbi singles, then Tina Finley came through with a three-run double. MMU's big inning made the score 16-6, the rally would end at that point unfortunately, and the 16-6 score proved to be the game two final score.
Mount Mary had 11 hits in game two and 20 in the doubleheader overall.
Tina Finley collected three hits and three runs knocked in; Alex Eads and Kylie Ann Kluck each tallied two hits in the back end of the twin bill.
Mount Mary (0-18, 0-6 CCAC) will next be in action against Indiana University South Bend. The schedule of the series has been slightly adjusted. Two games will be played this week between the Blue Angels and the Titans, both home games for MMU. The doubleheader is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1st at 11 am and 1 pm at Glendale Community Park.
