Nance’s Home Run Shines in Tough Doubleheader Matchup
Mesa, Ariz. --- The Blue Angels of Mount Mary University trekked to Mesa, Arizona, to take on Benedictine University Mesa in a doubleheader on day two of spring break. In game one, the Redhawks outscored the Blue Angels 14-0 in five innings. The Blue Angels found their groove in game two, but the Redhawks shut them down in five innings, 11-3.
Game One:
In the bottom of the first inning, the Redhawks got to work early. They scored five runs with four hits, leaving the Blue Angels down, 5-0. The Blue Angels got a taste of their potential with Tina Finley (Canyon Country, Calif.) singling into the gap, but she was left on base in the top of the second inning. The Redhawks plugged in six more hits, resulting in six more runs. The Redhawks held a convincing lead of 11-0 after two. The third inning was quiet on both sides, leaving the score unchanged, 11-0. In the top of the fourth inning, the Blue Angels recorded two hits. Taylor Hames (Sugar Grove, Ill.) and Alex Eads (Lincoln, Ill.) each singled. Lily Day (Hinckley, Ill.) reached base on a fielder's choice. Unfortunately, Eads and Day were both left on base. The Redhawks contributed an additional three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, 14-0. With the chance to continue the game, the Blue Angels came out hot. Ava Flannery (Pipestone, MB, Canada) and Anna Corpas Salcedo (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) singled to center field to give pinch hitter Nirella Coehlo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) the opportunity to advance the runners as she did. Once again, Flannery and Salcedo Salas were left on base, which ended the game. The Redhawks flew away with the 14-0 victory in five innings.
Game Two:
The Blue Angels came out hot at the top of the first inning. Eads got things going for MMU by singling to right field. Day continued the trend by hitting a double, which advanced Eads to third. Amanda Nance (Antioch, Ill.) swung home the Blue Angels first run of the trip. Kylie Ann Kluck (St. Francis, Wis.) brought home Day and advanced the Blue Angels lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the first inning, the Redhawks captured one run on two hits. Ayja Cushman (Racine, Wis.) continued the momentum in the top of the second inning. She advanced to second but was left on base and unable to come home. In the bottom of the second, the Redhawks added another run. After two, the score was tied 2-2. With two outs in the top of the third inning, Nance came up to the plate and hit a home run, regaining the Blue Angel lead at 3-2. The rest of the game was in favor of the Redhawks as they secured the win in five innings, 11-3.
