White Records Career-High 20 Kills in Loss to Calumet
Whiting, Ind. --- The Blue Angels of Mount Mary University travelled south to take on conference opponent Calumet College St. Joseph. The Crimson Wave came away with a close four-set battle, 3-1.
Highlights From The Box Score:
- Andriana White (Erin, Tenn.) secured a career-high 20 kills on the night. Gabby Saucedo Salas (Flagstaff, Ariz.) followed behind with 11 kills.
- Ava Fincher (Owensboro, Ky.) led the offense with 31 assists.
- White also led the team with three service aces.
- Abigail Manthey (Mukwonago, Wis.) dug up a team-high 21 digs.
What Happened
The Crimson Wave scored the first three points of the match. The first kill of the night came from White as the Blue Angels trailed 7-5. CCSJ beat MMU to point ten, 10-6. White found herself another kill, 12-7. Saucedo Salas grabbed her first kill of the night as the Blue Angels continued to fight from behind, 13-8. Back-and-forth action continued, and the Crimson Wave pulled away, winning set one, 25-19.
Set two started the same, with CCSJ scoring the first three points. White got the Blue Angels on the board with a kill and service ace, 3-2. CCSJ scored five straight points before the Blue Angels were able to side out, 8-2. The Blue Angels strung together three consecutive points from White kills, 13-9. The Crimson Wave scored another six straight points, 19-9. The remainder of the set was in favor of CCSJ, and they took set two, 25-14.
Set three began, and the Blue Angels dropped the first two points. They were quick to gain those points back and tie the set, 2-2. Set three did not see many large runs until the Blue Angels finally found their momentum. They scored five straight points from a White kill, a service ace, and a Rosalina Palacios (Chicago, Ill.) kill. This run forced CCSJ to call a timeout with MMU leading 16-14. The end of the set found ties four separate times. The Blue Angels were able to connect and won the set after Saucedo Salas scored back-to-back kills, 26-24.
Once again, the Crimson Wave scored the first three points of the set. The Blue Angels were then able to secure the lead after scoring the next four. Delnora Darden (Hendersonville, Tenn.) secured a service ace. CCSJ scored off of MMU errors to extend their lead, 6-4. The Blue Angels snatched the lead after kills from White and Saucedo Salas, 9-8. Lily Severson (Cottage Grove, Wis.) picked up a big momentum kill for the Blue Angels, which started a three-point run, 17-13. CCSJ did not get flustered and proceeded to score the next six points, switching the lead back in favor of the Crimson Wave, 19-17.MMU did not lose focus as White scored three kills, bringing CCSJ to call a timeout, 21-19. Calumet and Mount Mary found themselves tied back up at 23-23, where Mount Mary took a timeout. Following the break, CCSJ scored the next two points to win the set, 25-23, and win the matchup 3-1.
