Sabres Hit Big At Bloechl

MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University basketball team lost to visiting Marian University 61-30 today at the Bloechl Center. The Sabres begin the year 2-0, while the loss moves the Blue Angels record to 1-3.
Jumping out ahead early, the Sabres controlled the glass pulling in nine team rebounds in the first quarter and held the Blue Angels without any offensive rebounds. The Sabres forced eight turnovers in the frame while allowing MMU to shoot 2-of-10 from the field. Marian shot 9-of-14 as a team in the first and parlayed that into a 23-4 lead.
The second quarter saw both teams spread the ball across the court and use the clock to its fullest. MMU held the Sabres to 10 points in the quarter and put up six of their own making it a 33-10 halftime.
In third quarter, the Sabres shooting continued to extend the lead. Marian shot 8-of-12 from the floor and went a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point territory. MMU added eight points off of six team rebounds.
The fourth saw the Blue Angels continue to fight. Pushing on the defensive end, and securing the ball led to MMU winning the final quarter 12-5.
Both Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) and Jess Runge (Jr./Freedom, Wis.) played the full 40 minutes of the game while leading the offensive attack. Onan finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and one steal. Runge went am accurate 3-of-5 from the floor with three steals and three assists to fuel her team.
Sabres Brittany Bauman led the game with 17 points and hit 3-of-4 3-pointers. Marian shot 9-of-22 3-point field goals as a team.
Following tonight's game against the Sabres, the Blue Angels will head to Rockford Tues. Nov. 24 to battle the Regents for the first time this season. Live video and stats of that game can be found at mtmaryathletics.com.
