Glendale, WI- The Mount Mary softball team was coming off of their closest game of the season when they hosted the Trolls of Trinity Christian in a home doubleheader on Saturday.
Unfortunately, MMU could not continue the momentum as they fell in both games by scores of 18-0 and 12-0.
The day began with a special ceremony for "Strike Out Cancer Day." The Blue Angel softball program used the day to bring awareness to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's "Strike Out Cancer Initiative" and raise funds for the battle against Cancer. In a moving pregame ceremony, all players and coaches from both teams held up signs recognizing people in their lives who have been affected by Cancer.
In game one, Trinity Christian took control with an eleven run top of the 1st.
Ava Flannery provided a defensive highlight in the second inning when she fielded a tough chance and made a great throw to record an out.
Nirella Coelho also provided great defense with a diving catch in short right field.
The Trolls would gradually extend the lead to the 18-0 final score. Taylor Hames provided a single for the Blue Angels in game 1.
Game 2 saw the Mount Mary defense shine early. Anna Corpas Salcedo made a strong catch in left and Ayja Cushman gunned down a steal attempt at second base.
Nirella Coelho and Gabriela Chagas also recorded strong defensive plays as Taylor Hames was sharp in the circle, tossing a scoreless first four innings.
The Trolls broke through in the 5th inning unfortunately, they plated four runs to claim the lead, Coelho made another tough catch in right field to prevent a bigger inning.
Ayja Cushman and Coelho came through with hits in the Blue Angel fifth, but MMU could not push across their first run of the day.
Trinity added two in the top of the 6th to increase the lead to 6-0 and then piled on 6 runs in the 7th inning for a 12-0 lead, which would prove to be the final score.
In game two, Coelho, Day, Nance, Kluck, and Cushman would collect hits for MMU.
Mount Mary (0-32, 0-20 CCAC) will complete their season next week with a busy stretch of games. It will begin in La Crosse on Tuesday, April 21st, with a doubleheader at Viterbo University. All updates and coverage of Blue Angel softball can be found here at www.mtmaryathletics.com
