Surprise, Ariz. --- The Mount Mary University Blue Angels kicked off their spring break trip in Arizona. They played against the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit. In game one of the doubleheaders, the Spirit came out on fire early in the game. They scored all ten of their runs in the first two innings. They secured a 10-0 win after five innings. In game two, the Spirit continued their momentum early and won the game in five innings, 13-0.
Game One:
The Spirit started off hot in the bottom of the first inning with two hits and four runs scored including a home run over the centerfield wall. They took an early lead, 4-0. The spirit continued to have a hot streak. They added three hits and six more runs to their lead. The score after two innings was 10-0. The Blue Angels smashed their first hit in the top of the fourth inning. Ava Flannery (Pipestone, MB, Canada) singled through to right field but was left on base. Kylie Ann Kluck (St. Francis, Wis.) contributed the second hit of the day for MMU. She singled to right field. Shortly after, Tina Finley (Canyon Country, Calif.) reached first base of a fielder's choice but was left on base as the game ended after five innings, 10-0.
Game Two:
The Spirit got to work early again. In the bottom of the first, they strung together seven hits which totaled to nine runs. They continued their early momentum by adding three more hits and three runs in the bottom of the second. The Spirit led 12-0 at the end of two. Anna Corpas Salcedo (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) reached base for the first time in her career in the top of the third. Gabriela Chagas (Brasilia, Brazil) also reached base on a fielders choice but was left on base. In the bottom of the third, the Blue Angels defense stopped the Spirit from adding to their lead. The fourth inning was quiet on both sides. In the top of the fifth, Corpas Salcedo recorded her first hit and stolen base. Unfortunately, the Blue Angels could not string together any runs, ending the game in five innings, 13-0.
The Blue Angels softball team is back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, March 3rd. They will play a double header against Benedictine Mesa at 12:00 p.m. CST and 2:00 p.m. CST.
