Strong Starts Not Enough as Blue Angels Fall to Tigers, 3–0
Bourbonnais, Ill. --- The Mount Mary University Blue Angels travelled for their first of four games this week. They took on the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers. The Tigers secured all three sets to win the match 3-0.
Box Score Highlights:
- Every offensive player recorded at least one kill. Andriana White (Erin, Tenn.) led the team with 10 kills. Gabby Saucedo Salas (Flagstaff, Ariz.) followed behind, picking up seven.
- Ava Fincher (Owensboro, Ky.) continued to lead the offense with 19 assists.
- Abigail Manthey (Mukwonago, Wis.) stayed sharp on the defensive end with 14 kills.
- Securing three service aces was Ciani Williams (Gurnee, Ill.)
What Happened:
White got the Blue Angels on the board first, scoring a service ace. The Tigers responded to receive the point. The set contained back-and-forth action and maintained a tied score, 8-8. The Tigers went on to score six straight points, which sent Mount Mary into a timeout. Saucedo Salas hit a dagger to bring MMU within four points, 14-10. The Tigers found a groove and did not look back, securing the set, 25-13.
Set two began in favor of the Blue Angels and Williams. The Tigers scored four straight to bring the score to 5-2. Kills from White and Fincher tied things back up 7-7. Similar to set one, the Tigers went on a six-point run, forcing a Mount Mary timeout, 13-7. Kills by Lilly Severson (Cottage Grove, Wis.) and Saucedo Salas brought MMU to 19-13. The Blue Angels gave a solid effort in hopes of clawing back, especially with back-to-back kills from White, 21-17. The Tigers did not let the Blue Angels back in and won set two, 25-18.
Once again, the Blue Angels found themselves scoring the first point of the set. This time, the Blue Angels went on the first run. Thanks to two service aces from Williams, the Blue Angels led 5-2. Olivet was able to tie the score at 7-7. Severson, Saucedo Salas, and White picked up kills, bringing MMU up by one, 11-10. The Tigers then scored four points on two separate occasions late in the set. The Blue Angels took a timeout down, 20-14. Once again, the Blue Angels gave the Tigers a run as they fought all the way back to 23-21. The Tigers took a timeout to regroup and then proceeded to score the final two points of the match. Olivet won set three 25-21 and won the match 3-0.
The Blue Angels will return home, to the Bloechl Center, tomorrow, Wednesday, October 8th, for a 6:30 p.m. start. They will face a non-conference opponent, Moody Bible.
