Sights Set On Sixth Season Win
Blue Angels host MSOE and try to match last season's record setting mark.
Inclement weather has slowed down the Blue Angels recently, but Mount Mary University (5-2) is hopeful that the Oct. 2nd contest against MSOE (2-8) will go off without a hitch. The contest was set to be played at the Nicolet tennis courts, but is now moved to Hart Park in Wauwatosa, Wis. starting at 4:00pm.
Almost a year ago to the day, the Raiders visited Hart Park to play host MMU. The Blue Angels won that dual match 6-3, and it would mark their fifth win of the season, setting MMU up for their record setting sixth regular season victory. Ana Mercado (So./Grafton, Wis.) fueled the flame that got the Blue Angels onto their winning streak in the 2013 dual match. After losing both first flight singles and doubles, Mercado stepped up to the challenge. The number two doubles match swung in favor of Mercado and Katie Wolk 8-0, then the ripple effect would travel to the Brooke Slamka (Jr./Racine, Wis.)/Briana Lock doubles team setting them up for 8-1 win. MMU would not turn back after that, winning four of the singles matches and clinching the first .500 season in team history.
This year's contest has the pesky sixth win dangling over the heads' of the Blue Angels players. Despite having the last match go "unfinished" due to unsafe playing conditions, MMU has been extremely focused throughout their tough matches. After getting swept by the Inferno doubles teams on Sept. 11th of this year, the Blue Angels won the third flight doubles match with Slamka and Sydney Dahlstrom (Jr./Marquette, Mich.) 8-6, and were tied 7-7 in the first flight doubles before the rain hit hard. MMU has been playing determined this season, and are ready again for a tough Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference team to face, this time the MSOE Raiders.
Once the Raiders play the Blue Angels, MMU will head to Chicago, Ill. to play Roosevelt University. The regular season finale for Mount Mary University is set for Sunday Oct. 5th at 11:00 am.
