Inferno In The Way Of Sixth Victory
MMU and Alverno College set for late season rematch.
It was a cloudy and cold day the last time Mount Mary University duked it out with Alverno College on the tennis courts. The Inferno came away with a 6-2 win over MMU. Quality games up and down the lineup card, most being decided by just a few points, some being called for darkness, but all thrilling. Tuesday Sept. 30th is the rematch for the two squads, with the first matches starting at 5:00 pm at Hart Park in Wauwatosa, Wis.
In the NCAA era for MMU, the Inferno have the lead in the overall series at 2-3. Both teams have been building from the ground up since their entrance to the NCAA. Alverno has recently just clinched their first conference tournament berth in tennis since beginning the tennis program. MMU tennis had their first participation in post season play last season when they were invited to attend the Great South Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
Losing the doubles matches has been the Achilles heel, in both losses for the Blue Angels they suffered sweeps in doubles play. Krista Olson (Jr./Appleton, Wis.) has been solid in both doubles and singles matches, she leads the team in winning percentage for both; 80 percent for doubles and 100 percent for singles. Every match for Olson demonstrates the players focus when in-between the lines, getting shuffled up and down the lineup card, she is 7-0 in her singles flights.
Ana Mercado (So./Grafton, Wis.) has been solid in her consistent role in the No. 1 singles flight, she is 5-2 on the 2014 season. It has been a season of top tier talent facing the Blue Angels, Mercado has been up to the task since suffering her last singles loss to Alverno College three weeks ago. Since then Mercado has been on a tear winning four straight singles contests, including one against the UW River Falls number one singles player Kelsey Hochberger (Jr./Maple Grove, Minn.) 6-4, 6-3.
Next on the slate for MMU following Alverno College will be MSOE. The contest will be held at the Nicolet tennis courts at 4:00 pm on Thursday Oct. 2nd.
