Rivers & Giddings recognized in Coast to Coast Conference Post Season Basketball Awards
Two Mount Mary first year basketball players were honored by the Coast to Coast Conference in their post season awards. The awards are voted on by conference coaches.
Deja Rivers was named conference Rookie of the year (best first year collegiate player) and 1st team all-conference, while Skye Giddings was named to the second coast to coast all conference team. The two MMU players were the only players younger than a sophomore to be recognized by the league.
Rivers, from Kenosha, Wisconsin, is averaging 16.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game through 24 contests. She is also shooting 42.5% from the floor. She poured in a season high 30 points against Finlandia on February 10th, her 6th 20+ point performance of the season. Her 406 points this season is second all time at MMU (to teammate Skye Giddings) and she stands just 22 rebounds short of the MMU single season record. She is 4th in the c2c in points per game, 3rd in rebounds per game and 11th in overall field goal percentage.
Giddings, from Omaha, Nebraska has rewritten much of the MMU basketball single season record book, she has scored the most points and made the most field goals during a single season of any Mount Mary player in the modern NCAA era. Giddings is currently averaging 18.1 points per game (3rd in the conference) and has made 46 3 point shots. Giddings has remarkably been in double digits scoring wise in every game this season and has tallied 7 games over 20 points.
With one regular season game to play and the C2C post season tournament, Mount Mary's six win improvement is the largest in program history. The Blue Angels snapped a long overall losing streak in November, an NCAA skid in December and won back to back road games in January for the first time since 2010.
The Blue Angels host Maranatha Baptist on Tuesday, February 21st and then will begin post season play on Thursday, February 23rd in the C2C conference tournament. MMU will take on the host team, The University of Mary Washington, and all coverage can be found on www.mtmaryathletics.com
