MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University Blue Angels defeated Emmaus Bible College today at the Bloechl Center. The 71-69 overtime win marks the first time since joining the NCAA that the Blue Angels were victorious in their home opener. The win gives the Blue Angels a 1-1 record to start the year, and knocks the Eagles down to 2-3.
It was a game of two halves, for both teams. The Blue Angels went 5-17 from the floor in the first quarter while holding Emmaus to a 2-15 effort from the field in the same quarter. The second frame saw a much more accurate MMU team as they went 6 of 9 from the floor and used that precision to go into the locker room leading 36-25.
Although the third quarter saw the same accurate 6-9 from the field for MMU, the Eagles chipped away dropping three three-pointers and out scoring MMU 20-17.
It was the fourth quarter were the Blue Angels lead slipped away. The Eagles controlled the glass while holding the Blue Angels to 3-9 from floor and out rebounded MMU 10-5 in the frame. The 19-11 run at the end of regulation forced the first overtime period of the season for both teams.
The overtime period started slowly for both Emmaus and the Blue Angels. Madison Laib hit a pair of free throws 30 seconds into the period giving the Eagles the lead. Becky Onan (So./Grafton, Wis.) hit the Blue Angels first OT point at the 3 minute mark on a 1-2 trip to the free throw line as MMU trailed by one.
The Eagles carried the lead until there was one minute left to go, when Katie Swofford (Fr./West Allis, Wis.) hit a three pointer in the corner to give the Blue Angels the lead of which MMU would not surrender.
Head Coach Marc Heidorf explained, "I'm very proud of the kids and the way they battled. I don't think there was a lot of belief in the gym heading into overtime, and then when they took the lead in overtime that we were going to be able to do what it took to get the win, but that is exactly what happened."
Onan finished with her first double-double of the year with 18 points and a team high 15 rebounds. That is the most rebounds Onan has pulled down in one collegiate game.
Teammates Katie Swofford and Ariel Oviedo (Jr./Shawano, Wis.) chipped in with 19 and 18 points respectively and pulled in a collective 15 rebounds.
"The effort put forth by Katie, Jess and Becky was inspiring." Coach Heidorf went on about his players' performances, "They were going to be tired either way, they made a decision and will be sleeping with a smile tonight when their heads hit the pillow."
The Blue Angels will prepare for Edgewood College as they head to the Edgedome Wed. Nov. 18. The Eagles are 0-1 on the young season after losing to UW Oshkosh 81-53 Friday night. The Eagles/Blue Angels tip-off is set for 7:00 pm on Wednesday. Live stats will be available at mtmaryathletics.com.
