Red Lions Attack Early
Blue Angels lose tough battle with visiting LCU
MILWAUKEE – Mount Mary University fell short 74-59 to Lincoln Christian University at the Bloechl Center Monday evening. The Blue Angels (5-15) could not stop the hot streak as LCU (13-5) won their seventh straight.
The Red Lions came out ready to go as they jumped out in front early 20-8. Turnovers were the issue for MMU early on, and that is what put them in an early hole. Even though the Mount Mary committed 17 first half turnovers, they refused to give up as they continued to cut into the lead. With three minutes left to go in the first, Jasmine Meyer (Fr./Lansing, Kan.) hit one of her two free-throws to make it a 30-28 deficit for MMU. In the remainder of the half, the Blue Angels had four turnovers and five missed shots. Going into the locker rooms, MMU trailed 38-30.
In the second, MMU came out hungry for three-pointers. They launched an uncharacteristic eight three pointers and hit five. As well as the Blue Angels shot from beyond the arc, they could not catch up to the Red Lions as they attacked inside and hit 46 percent from the floor in the half. While LCU attacked inside they got to the line 14 times in the last 20 minutes; converting 12.
With a great effort, Chrisandra Freeman (Fr./Cedar Rapids, Iowa) tried to take the game back herself. Freeman had 12 points and four steals in the final 20. The rookie finished the game with 19 points, five steals, four assists and eight rebounds.
Taylor Baumgart (So./Burlington, Wis.) hit her first double-double in one of her best games of the season. Baumgart finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and three steals.
"The pace of the game was not where we needed it to be in the first half. We were matching buckets with them but this being our 4th game in 6 days, it was a matter of time before that up and down caught up to us."
Coach Heidorf went on, "second half the spirit was willing but the bodies were understandably a step behind."
The Blue Angels will have to find some extra energy, they host another game this Wednesday. Silver Lake College will be in town for a rematch Feb. 11th at 6:00 pm.
