Blue Angels Hit The Road For Doubleheader
MMU travels to Dubuque, Iowa looking for their first win of the season.
The Blue Angels are heading to Dubuque, Iowa for a doubleheader. The first game is a rematch of Mount Mary University vs Clarke University (6-5) on Friday Dec. 5th at the Kehl Center with tipoff at 7:00 pm. Second on the docket will pit the Blue Angels against Emmaus Bible College on Saturday Dec. 6th at 1:00 pm on the Emmaus Campus.
Previously, the Blue Angels were overwhelmed by the Clarke defense, turning the ball over 29 times and shooting 15 percent from the floor. The fact that the Crusaders hit 37 of 74 from the field did not help matters. While the Blue Angels now have a few more games under their belts as a team, they are expecting to make significant progress from the inaugural contest between the schools.
Since beginning the season with multiple injuries up and down the lineup, the young roster has been forced to put in a minimum of 34 minutes a night. A tough task to ask even some of the most conditioned and seasoned NCAA athletes. Chrisandra Freeman (Fr./Cedar Rapids, Iowa) has taken to the increase in minutes quite well since the Clarke game.
Freeman has moved around a bit, trying to find her most productive spot on the court. It seems the rookie has found it, averaging 11 points and 10 rebounds since the game against the Crusaders on Nov. 20th. Freeman also pulled down her first collegiate double-double against Northland College, and was one rebound shy of duplicating that feat against Moody Bible Institute.
The second game of the doubleheader will be against Emmaus Bible College. This will be the first contest between the two institutions, and should provide for an exciting matchup. The Blue Angels have been focused on increasing their good looks, and seemed to have taken that idea to heart in their most recent game against Moody Bible Institute. It was a game where the Blue Angels actually outshot the Archers, but as the better looks were there, they just were not dropping as MMU finished with 19 percent from the field.
Another youngster playing well as of late is Becky Onan (Fr./Grafton, Wis.), finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Northland College. Most recently, Onan has been pushing herself at all ends of the court for 35 minutes and ending the game against the Archers with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.
Following the road trip in the Hawkeye State, the Blue Angels will get to buckle down and study as their first semester classes wind down. After almost a month of no games, MMU will pick it back up on Jan. 3rd at 12:00 pm against Finlandia University in Hancock, Mich.
