Bloechl Center Ready For 2014-15 Basketball Season
Blue Angels ready for home opener.
It is home opener time for the Blue Angels basketball team (0-2). Mount Mary University will be hosting Clarke University (4-4) Thursday Nov. 20th starting at 6:00 pm at the Bloechl Center.
This will be the first time the two schools have met since MMU joined NCAA DIII. On the young season, the Blue Angels have already had to learn some important lessons, communication and trust. Between the first two games, the team cut their turnovers in half, and turn up the defense allowing fewer points in the paint, second chance scores, and fastbreak points.
It is early in the season for the Blue Angels, just two games in, but the 2014 freshmen class are having a huge impact. Chrisandra Freeman (Fr./Cedar Rapids, Iowa) took control in the game against Alverno College, towards the end of the game the rookie just seemed determined to score. Freeman attacked the hoop constantly and not only started picking up the offense, but got the Inferno to give up positioning. In the second half alone, Freeman went 12 of 14 from the free throw line.
Jasmine Meyer (Fr./Lansing, Kan.) has stepped up into the forward role in a huge way. Meyer has been a great offensive presence, scoring 12 point in the contest against Alverno. Continually working on both sides of the court, Meyer also pulled down eight rebounds, two assists, a steal, and three blocks. Already making a big impact on the court in just her first two games in NCAA.
As the team begins to step up their cohesiveness and communication, the production on the court has seemed to increase as well. With a battle tested group like Clarke University coming in with eight games already played, the Blue Angels know it will be a serious test to continue the upward swing on the learning curve.
Following the game against the Crusaders, MMU will get ready for the Marian University Sabres. The Blue Angels will head up to Fond du Lac, Wis. on Saturday Nov. 22nd, with tipoff at 2:00 pm.
