MILWAUKEE – Following her consistent play this season and another impressive performance last week, Erica Williams (Fr./Bloomington, Ill.) has been named the next Blue Angels Spotlight Player. One of the most consistent players of the season, Williams recorded her seventh double-double of the 2017-18 campaign last week against Silver Lake (18-7).
The rookie forward has been a dominant presence in the post all season long, but in the second half of the year, Williams has surged with some eye-catching numbers. Following the holiday break at the end of December, Williams has posted six of her seven double-doubles and only has come under ten rebounds in three games in that span.
The surge in rebounding has catapulted Williams to first in the Association of Division III Independents in rebounds per game at 10.4. That average makes her the only player in the AD3I to average a double-double on the season. Williams is top ten in the AD3I in scoring with 11.1 points per game but leads the association with a 49.4 field goal percentage.
Last Wednesday at the Bloechl Center, Williams recorded her seventh double-double in MMU’s loss to Silver Lake. Williams pulled in 10 rebounds and scored 12 points for her team. Using her quick hands against the very tall Laker lineup, the 5-7 forward ripped away three steals in effort to neutralize SLC’s post.
Williams has pulled down 188 rebounds in total. As of now, she sits in third place in the MMU annals for most rebounds in a single season: Mary Holmberg (‘12) finished with 197 and Ashley Leverenz (’14) holds the record with 212 during the 2010-11 campaign.
With three games left to go, the young forward’s averages hint that she will break the record of 212 this season. Watch Williams and the Blue Angels in both their games this week at mtmaryathletics.com.
