Red Hawks Hot Start

GARY, Ind. – Tonight at the Savannah Center Gymnasium, the visiting Mount Mary University volleyball team lost to the host Indiana University Northwest by a match score of 3-0. The Blue Angels move to 1-12 on the season while the Red Hawks now sit at 20-7.

In the season rematch, the Red Hawks jumped in front 9-0 to open up the first frame. Mount Mary University Head Volleyball Coach Natalie Baletto promptly took a timeout after their opponent's quick start. After the break, the Blue Angels snapped the streak and worked to 11-2.

The Blue Angels continued to attempt to chip away at the lead. After MMU made things 19-7 in the first, the Red Hawks closed the set with a 6-0 run.

In the second set, the Blue Angels attacked early. Indiana University Northwest took a slight lead at 3-2 despite the hot start for MMU. The teams traded points back and forth midway through the set. The Red Hawks led by a narrow 12-8 margin, then went on a 12-1 run that stretched out the lead. IUNW eventually won the set 25-9.

MMU took the first lead in the third set of the evening. The teams again traded the lead early on in the set. The Red Hawks slowly pulled out to an 8-5 lead. After a pair of long runs by IUNW, the host Red Hawks grabbed the 25-7 set win and overall match victory.

Senior Lauren Harris (Sheridan, Ill.) and freshman Alexis Levenhagen (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) led the offense for the Blue Angels with three kills each. Harris added 11 digs with two other teammates to lead their team.

Levenhagen along with teammate Alessa Nelson (Jr./Rockford, Ill.) each smashed a service ace during tonight's contest to lead their squad. Nelson also led her team with three assists against the Red Hawks.
