MILWAUKEE – The Mount Mary University Athletic Department has announced that Tim Edwards has resigned as head softball coach for the Blue Angels. An integral pillar to the rebuilding of MMU Athletics, coach Edwards will end his career with the Blue Angels setting numerous school records in recruiting and in wins.
"I had always planned on leaving the program in better shape than when I started. I believe I have accomplished that," said Edwards. In the five years prior to coach Edwards taking the helm, the Blue Angels had a combined 15-119 record, which included three winless seasons, and the worst ever loss in NCAA softball history (60-0 loss to Beloit College on Apr. 7, 2009).
In his four seasons as head coach, Edwards steadily increased the play on the field, level of competition, and the overall recruiting culture. He tied the school's win record in just his second season (2015) and received the Association of Division III Independents Coach of the Year Award in the same season. Coach Edwards continued that path and again tied the same wins record in 2016 when MMU played in the Great South Athletic Conference.
After coach Edwards brought in the largest athletic recruiting class in MMU history for the 2017 season, the team was able to break the school's previous wins record with a 14-21 season while simultaneously playing the hardest strength of schedule in school history. The historic season saw MMU sweep the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference's third ranked team MSOE, and teams from six other NCAA conference; a school first.
In four years, coach Edwards finished with an overall record of 35-90; more than twice the wins of any softball coach in Mount Mary history.
"Coach Tim brought back a program that was on life support," said Mount Mary University Athletic Director Marc Heidorf. "He put everything he had into finding quality student-athletes and gaining the respect of his colleagues; not respect for himself as much as he wanted people to know about and respect Mount Mary softball."
"His contributions to our entire department will be sorely missed and near impossible to replace."
The hard work, dedication, passion and drive of Tim Edwards will truly be missed by Mount Mary University. The entire MMU community thanks coach Edwards for all his contributions and wishes him well in his future endeavors.
