Super-SAAC Hosts Special Olympics Ball Friday

Super-SAAC Hosts Special Olympics Ball Friday

MILWAUKEE – The fourth annual Special Olympics Ball presented by the Mount Mary University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is this Friday on MMU's campus at 6:00 pm. The much-celebrated event in the Alumnae Dining Room will have a twist this year. Those in attendance can trade in their gowns or tuxedos for vibranium, capes and masks as this year's ball is superhero/supervillain themed.

Planning for the first ever even began in the 2014-15 academic year when MMU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee decided to become a member of the Special Olympics College Club. According to SpecialOlympics.org, this multi-institutional club reaches across the country in an effort to, "…connect college students and individuals with intellectual disabilities through sport to build friendships and help lead the social justice movement of Special Olympics."

In an effort to stand out from the events hosted by other club institutions, the Blue Angels came up with the idea of a ball to unify communities. Mount Mary University Assistant Director of Athletics and SAAC Advisor Kelsey Peterson noted, "We wanted to offer something a little different than the typical sporting event, so the idea of hosting a dance was born."

Each year these events have used the platform of the dance to raise money for Special Olympics Wisconsin with a silent auction. Multiple local establishments and community members donate items and memorabilia to be used in the auction with all the proceeds going to Special Olympics. Past items included sports memorabilia, gift certificates for local and national establishments, assorted gift baskets and more.

This year's event begins at 6:00 pm in the Alumnae Dining Room on the campus of Mount Mary and is open to the public at no charge for admission. "It is wonderful to provide an event that everyone can participate and relax together," added SAAC Advisor Kelsey Peterson, "we invite everyone at Mount Mary and encourage the community to also get involved."

Bring your inner superhero, or supervillain (clothes only), to this year's ball and join as these communities unify for a night of fun. Whether you hail from Gotham, Gallifrey, Metropolis, Professor Xavier's Academy, or any far reaches of the universe, make sure your bulletproof bracelets or kryptonite ring is polished and ready to go for Friday night.
